There are cities with music scenes, and then there is Austin — where on any given night, hundreds of stages light up within a few downtown blocks. The twin epicenters are Sixth Street and the Red River Cultural District, and together they earned the city its title: Live Music Capital of the World.
Sixth Street’s historic blocks mix honky-tonk history with every genre under the moon — blues spilling from one doorway, indie rock from the next, a jazz trio in a courtyard between. A few steps north, Red River’s beloved clubs — outdoor stages, storied punk rooms and listening bars — carry the torch for Austin’s working musicians, with the district officially protected as a cultural treasure.
January’s Free Week and fall’s Hot Summer Nights turn the district into a multi-venue festival where every door is open and every set is a discovery. Many shows cost little or nothing; the cover, when there is one, goes to the bands.
Come with open ears and no plan at all. In Austin, the best concert of your life is usually the one you stumble into.
